Dr Mahmud studied undergraduate Medicine at King’s College London and was a clinical student of King’s College Hospital. He was medical houseman at the Kent & Sussex Hospital and trained in General Medicine at King’s College, St Thomas’, St Peter’s and Pembury hospitals.

He undertook his rheumatology training at King’s College Hospital with Professor David Scott and Dr John Goodwill, the Lupus Unit at St Thomas’ Hospital with Dr Graham Hughes and at Guy’s Hospital rheumatology unit with Professor Gabriel Panayi and Dr Terry Gibson.  Dr Mahmud also provided the Ankylosing Spondylitis service at the Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases.

Dr Mahmud received a Clinical Excellence Award in 2008 and an NHS SE Innovations award on his work on patient feedback in 2010.
